MTV
d'émissions spéciales intitulées "Summer Of MTV"
:
Semaine 28 - Rock Am Ring
Semaine 30 - Fields Of Rock
Semaine 31 - Roskilde Festival
Octobre 2003 - Latin America
Novembre 2003 - Asia (Japon confirmé)
Janvier 2004 - Australia (confirmé)
Début printemps 2004 - "European arena tour"
Moitié - fin printemps 2004 - "US arena tour"
(lol) :
"When I was a kid I grew up as a fan of Metallica - they changed my
life, because they wrote 'One' and 'The Thing That Should Not Be' and I dont
see any American Metal band that has emerged in the last 10 years getting even
close to that standard of songwriting."

Le
Sunday mail (journal
"Metallica has always existed in its own world. It's never
been a part of any wave or any fashion or any kind of scene," says Ulrich.
"We just existed in our own little bubble and that's probably why we are
still around. I have always considered Metallica to be outsiders. It was the
mainstream that came over to us."
When James Hetfield returned from rehab last year, Lars and KIrk were not sure
how things would turn out
"We were all standing around pretending we weren't watching as James put
his guitar on," says Ulrich.
"Then he turned on his amp and within five seconds we knew he still had
it. I have never been around someone who has been through that process of rehab
so I didn't know what to expect. It was an awkward time."
Ulrich insists that Hetfield's sobriety doesn't mean Metallica are now a band
of teetotallers.
"Certainly, things are not as relentless as they used to be. Swinging from
the rafters and the chandeliers are thankfully behind us, but Metallica has
not turned into one of those bands that has rules and regulations."
La partie "vente" de Sick'N Destroyed
devrait ouvrir demain.

Kirk
Hammett a révélé
St Anger a déjà cédé
sa place de N° 1 au Billboard. Momentanément??

Bob
Rock nous parle de l'enregistrement
de St Anger :
I went through the process of learning how to make records for 20 years, and
for the last 10 years I've been disregarding my craft more and more. 'St. Anger'
is where it's been the best it's about as close to a bare wire as I think
I can be, and I ultimately think that's the best kind of production. It's more
about what's not there than what's there, and that's a hard thing to do. I've
kind of made a career out of fixing stuff that shouldn't even be on a record.
I made it sounds good that's part of what my craft has been. But it's
so much easier when there's a great piece of music. So we tried to have every
little bit of music and lyric on the album be great. When you do that, you don't
have to pretty it up or glaze it over.
"I
would say I've only [done something] this brutal [sounding] when I've done demos.
It probably sounds heavier because it's Metallica, but really this was a 15-minutes-on-the-drum-sound
type of thing. In some case there were only two dynamic mics on the cymbals
because I had to run out and play bass, so I didn't have time to set up other
mics. It was just so guerilla. But we embraced that approach right away.
"When we started the first part of the sessions at the Presidio, we decided
not to approach anything the way we had in the past, which was fine with me,
because I couldn't work with them again if we were going to do things the same
way. So I just went opposite of how I've gone with these guys in the past. As
a matter of fact, on a couple of songs, there's no bass mic or DI on the bass
the bass is leaking through the drum mics. It was a great sound, too,
because we were all so close together and so loud. It worked, so we kept with
that, and it really developed over all the songs we did. Some songs have more
mics, some don't, but it really was all done very quickly."
Petite anecdote amusante...

metz(57) et me suis retrouvé tt seul a ce festival fields of rock , juste
. Quelques petites boutades telles que
" who's got the St anger album ? Do you want hear some shit from it? Okay,
who's got a cd player here??" s'en suit deux tentatives pour jouer "frantic"
et encore une petite boutade du sieur jaymz :"oh what happened , we're
professionnals !!! ". but un " sad but true " gigantesque . ensuite
suivent "St anger" , "seek and destroy" (avec la encore
des vannes a la hetfield : " the next song is really slow , good melody
, no energy , no fun , nothing , only listen !!), "master of puppets"
(avec le traditional one , two, three, four qu'hurle la foule en delire) . Puis
"damage inc."
, alors je dirais , METAL'UP YOUR ASS !!! et à l'année prochaine
See Ya"

6 novembre, Tokyo, Yoyogi Taiikukan
7 novembre,
Tokyo, Yoyogi Taiikukan
9 novembre,
Sapporo, Ice Arena
13 novembre,
Osaka, Osaka Castle Hall
14 novembre,
Nagoya, Rainbow Hall
MetallicA s'insurge contre l'utilisation
the Good, the Bad & the Ugly.
de Fade to Black retentissent.
? "
Une cacophonie assourdissante secoue la vieille bâtisse
parisienne. " D'you like it ?"... Nouveau tremblement.
il est de coutume depuis maintenant 20 ans : " We are scanning the scene
in PARISSSS tonight ! ".

review des shows est en cours. J'essaie
A méditer toutefois...
"If nothing else, whether this (album) sells seven copies or 7 million,
we proved it's possible to make a fast, aggressive, angry, dynamic album fueled
on nothing but positive vibes," drummer Lars Ulrich says. "Five years
ago, that would have been impossible. I don't have any delusions of grandeur
about this record in terms of magnitude or numbers. I do have a pretty good
barometer for the temperature around me, and there's a lot of love being thrown
in Metallica's direction at the moment.
"Nobody has any idea how this will do in the marketplace,
whatever that is anymore. Obviously, it sits a little left of center. It feels
like we're outsiders again, poking and prodding."
"We rarely go into the studio with a specific vision," Hetfield says.
"The more we played the fast stuff, the better it felt. Then we had our
mission: Let's make the most relentless, punishing songs we can. Part of me
wanted to prove to the world, after Napster, after Jason and all the trauma,
that Metallica is alive and stronger than ever. Another part of me knows we
don't need to prove anything."
Ulrich concurs. "There's nothing left to prove. The only statement I'd
want to make is: It's been 22 years, we're still here, and a fair number of
people still consider us relevant."On the issue of Napster, Hetfield says:
"Lars took so many shots. He's still reeling. The image of him was mob-ruled,
and he became the Saddam of rock. But we had to take a stand. There was no thought
of the consequences or image management."
"We got blindsided by the enormity of it," Ulrich says. "It started
when some guy put a song on the Internet that we hadn't finished mixing yet.
And I wanted to know where it came from.
"Things took a drastic turn from there. It was never about money and greed;
it was about control. I have no problem giving (music) away, but I want to decide
what to give."
"I wanted to do something to shake up radio and the way everything else
sounds," said Rock, who helped write the music and lyrics and played basslines
on the album. "To me, this album sounds like four guys in a garage getting
together and writing rock songs, and that's just how we wanted it to sound."
"There was really no time to get amazing performances out of James,"
Rock said. "We liked the raw performances. And we didn't do what everyone
does and what I've been guilty of for a long time, which is tuning vocals. We
just did it, boom, and that was it."
"We made a promise to ourselves that we'd only keep stuff that had integrity,"
Rock said. "We didn't want to make a theatrical statement by adding overdubs.
If we added something and it helped the mood or what we were trying to convey,
that stayed. But if it distracted from that ... then we killed it. Every time
we tried to do a solo, either it dated it slightly or took away from what we
were trying to accomplish in some other way. I think we wanted all the aggression
to come from the band rather than one player."
"A lot of the songs were done in William Burroughs cut-and-paste fashion,"
said Rock, referring to a style in which a piece of writing is cut into pieces
and reassembled at random. "There are movements in moviemaking and in music
where you take technology as an art and you actually abuse it. Some people use
ProTools to trick and fool the listener, but we used it more as a creative tool
to do something interesting and stretch boundaries.
"Technically, you'll hear cymbals go away and you'll hear bad edits. We
wanted to disregard what everybody assumes records should be and throw out all
the rules. I've spent 25 years learning how to do it the so-called right way.
I didn't want to do that anymore."

Metallica a écoulé 418000 copies

BATACLAN
The Four Horsemen
Leper Messiah
No Remorse
Fade To Black
Frantic
Ride The Lightning
Blackened
Seek And Destroy
Damage, Inc.
TRABENDO
Blackened
Fuel
Harvester Of Sorrow
One
St. Anger
Enter Sandman
Master Of Puppets
Creeping Death
Hit The Lights
jolie... Pour une fois!

Voici
le commentaire de notre
Bud
national quant à l'album St Anger.
Blackened
No Remorse

MTV
Blackened, Harvester,
Creeping, Sad, No remorse, One, Sanitarium...

Le site off

pour l'instant : Dirty Window ("I'm judge and I'm Jury and I'm excecutionner
too" !!!!), all Within my hand, et My world !! "
: Dirty window, All within my hands, my world, et surtout Invisible kid."

New York, NY - Due to the unprecedented level of anticipation and the prevalence
of sub-standard versions of Metallica's upcoming, St. Anger, already in circulation,
Elektra Records has moved up the release date of the new album, from Tuesday,
June 10, to Thursday, June 5.
Elektra and Metallica have taken this extraordinary measure to ensure
that counterfeit copies of the band's first studio album in six years do not
proliferate in the marketplace. Metallica unanimously approved the move, guaranteeing
that fans get first crack at hearing the acclaimed disk the way the band intended:
Loud and unadulterated.
A spokesperson for Elektra indicates that this is a rare exception to standard
release policy for the label, pointing out that demand for the new Metallica
album warrants every measure be undertaken to prevent unauthorized leaks of
St. Anger. In the past year, superstar artists such as Eminem and 50 Cent have
both moved up their respective release dates to stem illegal piracy. Metallica
is the first rock band to move up a release to counter the spread of unauthorized
copies. According to noted magazine's Spin and Blender, Metallica followers
will be ecstatic to hear St. Anger the way the band intended. Says Spin: 'This
is the album Metallica lifers have been waiting for: an inspired return to the
complex savagery of old.' Blender raves: 'Once again their music is about bringing
the carnage...whiplash time shifts and thrash guitar evoke prime Metallica.'

Damage inc
du So What!
"There appears to have been a moment in time where people wondered whether
Metallica would ever make another album again, let alone a heavy one. It got
so worrisome that those who criticized the Load and Re-load
era were, in late 2001, seen to eating their fists in the hope that there might,
perhaps, be some outtakes which could constitute a Metallica elpee. Because
having heard the news that Metallica were investigating new life at The Presidio,
the fans then heard that it might all be over. No bassist. James in extensive
self-help. Lars and Kirk drifting, wandering
And now, sitting here many months later, months from The Presidio, rehabs, three
members, indecision, confusion, worry, dispair, inertia, all of it, I am roundly
reminded of that cliché all good things come to those who wait.
Because St. Anger is so upfront, so caustic, so abrasive, so aggressive,
so purposeful, so focused, so driven, so utterly relentless, that it stands
not only as Metallicas most extraordinary achievement to date, but their
very heaviest, most involved album ever.
This is not about going back to the old days or hearing new
sounds. This is about Metallica no longer avoiding the essence of their
spirit, inviting it back into the room and fusing it with the wisdom and knowledge
of their 22 years as a band. Its why St.Anger is all about
the demolition of bloat, the exorcism of insecurity, the abolition of unnecessity.
This band have rediscovered everything that made them pick up instruments before
they could really play them, who take nothing for granted anymore, and who finally
have the confidence to just plug-and-play together with some mikes, with some
amps and see what happens in the creative Petri dish.
As a result of this more relaxed, freewheeling approach, St. Anger
puts its cast-iron head down, charges straight at you and spends the next
75 minutes standing imposingly, defiantly, about an inch from your face.
And it doesnt just stand there, it stands there and screams really really
REALLY loudly.
No breaks.
No respites.
No ballads.
No solos.
Just music and truths.
This is an album created at the altar of power, the God that is Riffage, the
true spirit and bodily fluid of Metallicas reason detre.
When theyre fast, it isnt because they think you or I might like
it, its because they bloody well LOVE it again, they REVEL in the use
of power and speed through their music to purge themselves of excess energies
and emotions. And this time, Metallica have managed to hohn their emotions,
pare them down to the bare necessities, and in doing so, the punch packed is
never less than a stinger and often much more than a knock-out.
By the way, before we go any further lets make one thing crystal-clear.
This is not a nu-metal album.
It is a Metallica album.
Its roots lie firmly in the fuck you-ness of Kill Em All
and the sheer self-involvement of the
Justice era. If theres
any lingering outside influences on St.Anger, its
the pure, timeless old Metallichildhood classics of the NWOBHM era, the stuff
that got them moving in the first place, the material that made them create
a whole new metal sound. Therefore, before you start saying Godsmack or System
Of A Down or whoever, remember carefully where the templates were laid and the
roots of furious, savage chungka chungka riffery sewn.
And now a small health warning: the sheer weight of St.Anger will
take its toll on you around minute 60. It is a wonderfully exhaustive
affair, celebrating aural excess on every single level, from heaviness to volume
to sheer audio levels. Digital engineer Mike Gillies explained that due to its
digital nature, this album was mastered at 20k. The usual mix process involves
analog tape and some audio saturation once you hit 12k. No tape, all digital
= no roll-off into saturation, no loss of dynamics, no automatically infused
warmth, just sound being pushed to its limits. It makes St.Anger
technically the loudest album ever created, and thats without taking into
account the psycho-acoustics that you feel but cannot hear.
The performances on St.Anger are extreme and laden with team spirit.
This is an album made in true collaborative spirit, and perhaps the most obvious
example of this was the decision that solos were not considered necessary for
the songs.
Inevitably, this be a point of controversy for some. It neednt be. Quite
simply the decision was correct, the material doesnt need solos, and Kirk
Hammett doesnt have the sort of ego that demands them, secure in the knowledge
that he is a virtuoso when needs arise. And between he and Hetfield, the guitars
sound gloriously strong and secure, without baggage or the weight of expectation,
just two players enjoying their riffery. Its wonderful to hear Hammett
simply enjoying the moment, shoving his talents right into the mix and getting
down and dirty without taking on the extra pressure of having to deliver
some icing, comfortable in the knowledge that often the best cakes aint
frosted.
As for Ulrich, this is his best album performance yet, a series of lurching
savage assaults on his kit, a gleeful ear (and feet and hands) for speed, a
gluttonous hunger for moreness on every single count and a perverse desire to
push limits and envelopes. How hell play this stuff live will be interesting
to watch, but you know hell niot only master it but be gleeful in doing
so. Because Im willing to stake a small bet on the fact that the abuse
he suffered during the Napster bullshit has left him as a man with something
to prove, a man who has decided that his mission in life is to make people eat-their-words,
or at the very least, plain old shit.
Hetfields performance on all levels is remarkable. To see him do a new
album is good, to see him do a new album like this is tremendous, but to see
him slowly enter worlds of compromise, confidence and satisfaction creatively
is literally incredible. It is why more often than not the tension and anger
and sheer weight of a life under process gets its spleen vented on St.Anger,
and what better a forum? Instead of holding onto issues, Hetfield has processed
them and allowed (where relevant) their free-flow into Metallicas creative
process. The result is a perfect blend of emotion and vicerality, the sort of
bubbling human stew which finds empathy with millions because (lets face
it) weve all been there or there abouts.
And lyrically he welcomed band input, throwing himself into the task of arranging
and working the words and thoughts together to form a truly congruent picture
of the last 20 months and the self-realizations that have come with that. Not
that he set out to make a biographical here, for self or band, its just
the way the natural process ended up working. And now, perhaps more than ever,
James Hetfield appreciates and acknowledges how important a part of his life
this creativity is.But the one player on this album nobody wouldve bet
on is Bob Rock. Despite his influence with the Black album, Rock
was vilified by some hardcore stalwarts who refused to appreciate that destinations
require journeys, and that Rock was helping Metallica on theirs. And for all
those who left in 1991, quivering with anger, theyd do well to admit that
humble pie tastes good, or else hang on to their prejudices and be prepared
to eat shit. Because not only has Rock proven the binding, calming force in
helping Metallica make this raging beast of an album, he damn well played on
it! Thats right, dont forget that little old Bob Rock, Uncle Bob
if you will, strapped on the ol four-string and delivered a continual
bottom end motherfucker, in the process coaxing even more from Lars as a player,
the two working together beyond the console for the first time. Make no mistake
(and he wouldnt tell you this but I most certainly will) Bob Rock is the
X factor here, the firestarter, the co-conspirator, the edge-pusher,
the margin-runner, the guy who sides with the band member who wants to try
it as opposed to settle for something, the man who has enabled Metallica
to make St.Anger. In my mind, his place as the fifth member is undeniable.
Yes, when the dust has settled, when the breads been broken and when millions
of ears have started breathing again, it will be obvious that with St.Anger
Metallica have not just made a superb comeback, but once again set the benchmark.
This is the sort of Metallica that forced snotty young teenagers to pick up
cheap guitars. This is the Metallica that made such statements a couple of times
before in their illustrious career. And this is the sort of Metallica that demands
the fear of God, a good deal of awe and mountains of respect.
Yes, St.Anger is EVERYTHING you asked for and
SO MUCH MORE! Once again, Metallica have set the benchmark
normal service
has been resumed."
Ci dessous son point de vue chanson
par chanson... Mais peut-il être objectif?
FRANTIC 5.50 : Raw, abrasive, very upfront, very brash. The main riff
is really, really Frayed Ends
type but given a huge rush of
juice
theres a whispering hum-type guitar behind the main riff that
sounds like a chorus of demons. My lifestyle determines my deathstyle
what a great line, accompanied by a particularly brutal sledge of riffery. TickticktickticktickTOCK.
The last 20 seconds breaks into a very sped-up Sabbathy type riff, drums repeatedly
hammered.
ST. ANGER 7.21 : Riff is edgy, snare drum harsh, and then the whole lot
cascades in before getting the V8 super-charge, Ulrich absolutely pounding the
shit out of the kit blast-beat style. Then an almost bluesy mellow passage allowing
James vocals to come through, before again bridging into brutality. The lyrics,
as you might expect, resonate particularly loudly with JH, though Id say
everyone in this band can relate to this here Saint!
Fuck it all and no regrets
and you kinda understand where
hes coming from. The whole sound is so beautifully unprocessed, yet clear.
Digital has helped their cause tremendously, allowing the tones to achieve a
clarity and harshness that surely allows the mix to remain simple.
SOME KIND OF MONSTER 8.26 : One of many relaxed, quiet one guitar intros
which quickly gives way to a 1000 elephants
cannot believe how riff driven
this material is (THIS MEANS VERY COOL!) Its all in the chunk. What a
sticky, sticky riff. First sign of a scratchy, loose, chicken-wire lead-type
guitar ambling through the absolute stomp. Thick thick sound, and yet more speed-drumming
to super-charge the song. Its 2.00 before a vocal even thinks of emerging.
When it does, it growls, and I gotta tell ya, this is the album that mightve
come in or around
Justice, but maybe it couldnt have
happened without the Black album or any of that. So many twists,
so many turns, so many breaks, but this time not for the posture of being able
to but for the joy of doing it.We the people accompanied by an absolute
flurry of drums, almost (dare-I-say it? blast beat)
the snare sound is
cracking
very rhythmic delivery of the chorus, almost like rapping (DONT
PANIC I AINT TALKIN REAL RAP) and backed with a really low gutteral
under vocal. The song swings, really, its got a swinging feel to it, but
whats swinging is about 400 lbs of concrete and steel.
DIRTY WINDOW 5.25 : Rata tat tat ta ta ta, fast, repeatedly, sole intro
instrument before unfolding into another fast riff, the cacophony is awesome,
Motorheady kind of affair, those drums ring ring in your ears, pinging and thwacking.
Quiet break to allow Im judge and Im jury and Im executioner
too
and then those rata tat tat drums like a platoon of machine guns. Those riffs
are so sandpaper and broken glass rough and ready, it really is red raw.
I drink from the cup of denial
these lyrics, wow, talk about
bleeding!
Note to self: this really is a marathon sprint, a seducer (you will not by-pass
any tracks here, theres no skipping, no shuffling about) but boy-oh-boy,
is it a mara---, nope, its a triathalon.
INVISIBLE KID 8.30 : Rolling horses, giving way to swing but again, its
the heaviness. Theres an inflection of the Frantic hook-riff
in there, this ones edging on melodic, the most straight-forward song
yet. Theres a superb ghosted melodic vocal from James riding in the chorus,
dreamy, spiritual, as though an inner-voice. Its as close to relief
as this albums got so far, but it still hangs behind musical brutality
and the energy required to listen to it is immense. But hang-on, it is 8 minutes
plus, were at 5 and change and theres a twist coming, a shifting
of gears, a painful, almost mournful passage from James from which he is dragged
by a galloping riff, some Alice In Chains-like vocal wanderings.
Interesting to note that whilst the vox are of course Hetfieldian, The trademarks
are less distinguishable and the experimentation greater than for some years.
They sit raw, unprocessed, unfiltered, a further sign of the growth in confidence.
MY WORLD 5.45 : Could be a NWOBHM riff, explodes into a rhino-like metal
charge before being broken by a multi-tracked, gang-vox like chorus from James.
Certainly enjoying playing with speed and aggression for the first time in many,
many years. NWOBHM song!!!! Got hints of COC in the main riff too
With
the tallica twist. Plus some speed. And an off-kilter blasty chorus. Before
caving into the word suckah and swinging all over the damn shop.
Before the riff and drums become speed metal. Yes, speed metal. People are going
to be very surprised.
SHOOT ME AGAIN 7.10 : Twisty little guitar scratch intro before bludgery
of riff and drum kicks in. Again more AIC-ish intro stuff, twisty, windy, quizzical,
a little spoken-barked chorus come on shoot me again Im not dead
yetbefore Lars breaks into a drum sprint. This is his reply to all who
took the pops at him over that issue.
SWEET AMBER 5.27 : A sweet pretty little guitar intro, and just when
you think a ballads coming, the riff is processed through some speed/aggression
training and then it kicks the doors down and bolts the stable
it feels
a bit like Sweet Savages Eye Of The Storm from Lars
own NWOBHM Metal Blade compilation album at times, then it breaks right down,
slow and sleazy, off how sweet are you? How sweet does it get!) before
galloping again. Sonically this is the most in control so-to-speak, speedy,
pacey, athletic almost, definite NWOBHM influence for sure though I think.
UNNAMED FEELING7.08 : (A survivior of The Presido sessions, started life
as balladic-Unforgiven type track, re-worked and re-shaped to fit
the current contextual climate). The guitar starts, another one in arhythmically
before they both unite to lay down a hugely simple, towering mid-tempo riff.
Thus a Metallica classic feeling here. An epic. Towering riff, riding
off mid-tempo, squirling guitars, funnel-vox (like theyre being sung through
a megaphone) before they switch into gritty. Indeed, these are the most recent
Metallica-like structured of the vocals, the same sort of feeling as The
Unforgiven
PURIFY 5.14 : Starts like a raging punk song, breaks into the swing and
lilt of aggro metal. Makes you lurch about and jump, mosh, pump those legs,
tailor-made for some Trujilloism live, and then the drums cascade into speed
off the chorus, this is just savage, like watching guard dogs strangling on
leads as bloody meat hangs an inch from their frothing jaws. Honestly! There
is speed but also in-the-pocket power. Interesting, lots of returns to the NWOBHM
sounds and feels, wrapped in punk attitude, given a scrub with wire brushes,
un-polished if you will. Sabbathy too mid-song, right near the end bit of the
ol Kyuss-flavored desert rock type open riffery, arrhythmic drum pattern.
Unrelenting as it gets deeper.
ALL WITHIN MY HANDS 8.48 : It is relentless! Vox are very, very upfront,
no hiding, not buried, the first layer in your ear. One thing with much of this
material is you just do not know the twists and turns its going to take.
But such brutality this late in the album? Unheard of. Excellent cascading choral
word (AGAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN) again some Chains-like arrangements and vox around,
but merely as flavor not structure. Being the original alchemists, Metallica
can infuse these melancholic melodies with raging anger, furious energy and
rude, rude amounts of aggression. The sadness and struggle of the bridges give
way to total thrash (old skool-style) and when JH barks kill kill kill
as the album closes, screaming, ripping his throat out, its an exorcism,
a purging not just of his own emotions but of this bands.

St
"top of the pops" et au CDUK à Londres.
"Metallica needs an image overhaul the way frontman James Hetfield needed
to dry out. It's been almost six years since the band bestowed an album of original
studio material upon the world, and in the interim, Metallica has dropped dud
after dud. Since 1997's lukewarm Reload, there's been a lame, Moody Blues-esque
symphonic live album; a two-CD set of covers, with every one recorded after
1989 a disappointment; and the very public, very self-inflicted demolition of
a hard-won reputation for integrity and fan-friendliness. Metallica has been
a corporation for a long time, but lately it's all you can see when you look
at them.
St. Anger is intended to be Metallica's rebirth, the reclaiming of their throne.
The official story's been that this record, due out on June 10, is the hardest,
heaviest thing they've ever done. That it's going to kick everyone's ass who
hears it and regain all the cred they've spent a decade or so throwing away.
That it's the new Ride the Lightning.
They really said that.
No, really.
Well . . .
St. Anger is definitely the noisiest, ugliest record Metallica's ever made.
It scrapes and slams and crunches and screeches. Lars Ulrich's drums crash like
empty barrels whacked with steel rods. James Hetfield's guitar chops the air
with the fury of a prizefighter. (Kirk Hammett's guitar, by contrast, is apparently
sitting in Jason Newsted's garage -- there's not one solo anywhere on this album.)
The vocals are sometimes distorted, like Ministry's; other times, though, Hetfield's
voice cracks, as he strains for long-lost notes.
The mix is punishing. Too often, the guitars and drums blend into a wall of
raw noise. Sitting and listening to this record (under the gimlet eye of a surly,
paranoid publicist -- Lars's hatred of the internet forbade mailing advance
copies to critics) isn't cathartic, the way the old albums were. It's painful.
Eventually, you start wanting to escape, to run from the noise and let a different
room's empty, silent air caress your eardrums, like cool water after a too-hot,
too-big meal.
And St. Anger is big, make no mistake about that. Eleven songs; 75 minutes.
Many tracks approach the nine-minute mark, bloated with extra choruses, false
endings, and tacked-on final sprints. There are false beginnings, too -- the
fourth track, "Dirty Window," opens with a great, huge, doomy riff,
but it's abandoned almost immediately in favor of the one that actually anchors
the song. Four minutes in, another riff is announced. And don't forget the pre-chorus,
all soft percussion and crooned vocals. The whole ugly mess is patched together
with the ProTools equivalent of staples and Scotch tape.
But let's begin at the beginning. "Frantic," the album opener that
was previewed on Metallica's MTV Icon special, encapsulates everything wrong
with their new music. Announcing itself with a hard, slashing guitar tantrum,
it suddenly stops, leaving behind a six-note bass figure that repeats twice.
Every time the song roars to life, the bass figure crashes it again. The trouble
is, the riff is a good one. It's loud and mean, and it makes your heart jump
in your chest -- but the bass part is flaccid. It's not a crescendo or even
a fanfare; it's just six notes that sit there like the band's resting up for
the next fast part, and it drains away all the momentum.
The best song is
track eight, "Sweet Amber." A swampy slide guitar introduces the hardest
thrash riff on the disc. Four minutes in, it gets "Battery" fast,
but the vocals are sung at half-speed. It's a great juxtaposition. And unlike
the rest of the disc, the lyrics aren't embarrassing. For the most part, St.
Anger is a solipsistic wallow in James Hetfield's pain. The songs are full of
self-pitying therapy clichés such as "My lifestyle determines my
deathstyle" and, from the title track, "I don't want my anger to be
me." What's he talking about? Hetfield's anger was half of what made Metallica
great. These new songs make Henry Rollins seem profound by comparison. And they
don't even sound good.
The old Metallica was as fast and riff-happy as Exodus, Anthrax, and Slayer
-- but it was clean. The band's sound gleamed like razor wire. St. Anger is
coated in all the digitally simulated grime millions of dollars can buy; the
trash-can drums and tinfoil cymbals are the worst of it, but the guitars sound
ugly, too. Nothing here sounds like it came through an amp. All the fine-tuning
that once kept the Metallica machine street-legal is gone, replaced with stolen
Helmet riffs and lyrics that sound co-written by Hetfield's AA sponsor.
St. Anger introduces the fourth version of Metallica. There was the Metallica
that took thrash metal aboveground, from Kill 'Em All through . . . And Justice
for All; the Metallica that got arena- and radio-friendly for the Black Album;
the Metallica that embraced boogie-rock and Marianne Faithfull on Load and Reload;
and now, there's this Lazarus Metallica, which wants to be hard and heavy again,
the way it was in the old days. But that was a long time ago -- and they were
pretty drunk. Metal's gotten faster, harder, and grittier in their absence,
and the new, middle-aged Metallica can't compete.
Deep down, they probably know it, too. On MTV, the only one worth watching was
new bassist Robert Trujillo. Of course he's excited. To him, it's all new music.
To his three bandmates, though, being Metallica might be starting to feel like
more trouble than it's worth. That's how St. Anger sounds: resigned, and more
than a little self-doubting. They're dressing up in old and ill-fitting clothes
and hoping metal fans won't be able to tell the difference. Well, we can."
